The project was started in 2016 and was the biggest undertaken by Friends at that time. The aim was to clear an unused and dangerous former water feature.
A small band of volunteers removed over 50 bags of sludge from the area. A main drain then had to be dug before the resurfacing and reconstruction work could begin.
Construction was difficult and complicated, necessitating the creation of a gap in the surrounding wall and the complete refurbishment of the interior of the structure.
We commissioned a renowned local mosaic artist to create a central feature reflecting key aspects of the park and its history.
A condition of the funding, including the National Lottery was that we employ a professional garden designer. Once this was completed the final garden was ready.
It was formally opened by the Mayor Cllr C Malpass, himself unsighted, which we felt appropriate.
